Text: रुद्रयामल — गौरीतन्त्र, शिवपार्वतीसंवाद

Shri Siddha Kunjika Stotram — Meaning

Shiva tells Parvati that the power of Kunjika makes Chandi japa auspicious. The opening verses praise its profound significance and the fruit of Durga recitation. The devotee then bows to the Goddess as Rudrarupini and the destroyer of Madhu, Kaitabha, Mahishasura, Shumbha and Nishumbha, praying that she awaken and perfect the recitation. The seed sounds, including aim, hrim and klim, invoke her powers of creation, preservation and divine intention. She is praised as the embodiment of mantra, the giver of fearlessness, the sovereign of speech, Bhairavi and the complete Parvati. The conclusion describes the hymn as a means of awakening the mantra, asks that its sanctity be preserved, and stresses its place in Saptashati practice.

Scriptural source and form

The concluding colophon reads “Shri Rudrayamale Gauri Tantre Shiva Parvati Samvade,” identifying the Gauri Tantra of the Rudrayamala as its source. Because it is traditionally recited with the Durga Saptashati, many Saptashati worship books also include it.

A devotional order of recitation

Sit in a clean place and remember Ganesha, Shiva and Maa Durga. Offer a lamp and flowers if available and settle the mind. Begin with the viniyoga and continue through Shiva’s words, the mantra, the praises and the conclusion in the printed order. Bow to the Mother and pray for forgiveness and the welfare of all beings.

Pronouncing the seed syllables

Read the vowels, nasal sounds and consonant clusters in aim, hrim, klim, glaum and the other seed syllables carefully. Keep a measured pace and preserve each sound. Learn the pronunciation by listening to a teacher of your tradition. Follow your guru’s tradition for specific mantra practices.

Its place in Chandi recitation

The hymn calls Kunjika a means of awakening the mantra. For a full Chandi ritual, follow your teacher’s order for the Kavacha, Argala, Kilaka and other accompanying texts. During Navratri and regular Devi worship, approach the Mother with devotion, careful pronunciation and a steady mind.
